Hopped into the Womtours with Kath (Brisbane, Aus) and Simone (Brazilia, Brazil) and our Irish driver.
9 euros to get inside for a tour of the castle. Trekked up (30 mins) then waited a while before being let in. Tour was quite short, and we weren't allowed to take pictures. Was going to but some knob did it with flash and the castle guide bellowed at him.
Pretty inside,
Sleeping beauty castle, same one in Disneyland
King Ludwig was a nutcase who was obsessed with spending money on building castles, unfinished as he was found "drowned" in a lake that was only knee deep. Bullet wounds found in his body... but hey!

Day 2

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=58082&id=507049473&l=8ae9b

Went out for a typical German breakfast, pretzels and weissewurst (white sausage) It went well with the sweet mustard provided.
Went to the English gardens for a walk, thought we found the Chinese tower, but actually it wasn't! haha
Headed to the Allianz Arena, home of the 2 Munich teams, FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich. We didn't know there was a game on today, but made a last minute decision to watch it for 21 euros. Unfortunately, the more famous Bayern were away in Berlin so we watched 1860.
Chants of "Sexy! Sexy!"-5 degrees! froze our assess off, not even gluewine (warm wine) could help
About 1/4 full, but the singing never stopped. Next time, buy cheap tickets behind the goalposts cause thats where the die hard fans are! Maybe when we are in Rome next week we might catch a Roma or Lazio game hehe
Ditched the BMW museum, decided to walk around Olympic Park
Went back to the city to have dinner with Ai Ling again, this time at Hard Rock Cafe

Day 1

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=57822&id=507049473&l=0710b
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=58081&id=507049473&l=068d0

Staying at Wombats again. However, this one in Munich is way bigger than the one in Vienna, and I'm staying in a room with 10 beds and 1 toilet!

Went on the Womtours with Ozzie, whose claim to fame is he's the only black tour guide in Munich! Apparently I can youtube him up, cause he has been on German TV before a few times haha. He is a funny guy, but he makes fun out of random people and I kena a few times!

One of the first stops was Pope Benedict's home church, where the famous devil's footprint can be found. According to legend, he stomped into the ground at that spot after the architect had outsmarted him by placing windows behind columns.

Then, we caught the Glockenspiel noon show, which was better than Prague's, but still overrated. We stopped for a break for an hour in Viktualienmarkt, and had some beers while we listened to some history. Then we finished off the tour somewhere near the blockade of Nazis.

Wandered around a bit after the tour before heading to the station to meet Kee Yie
Caught up, then went for dinner with Ai Ling at the Hofbrauhaus! Disneyland
Bavarian salted pork knuckles, crackling pork knuckles (standard)
Washed it down with schnapps and a stein (1L) of beer!

Berlin! Berlin!

Day 4

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=57523&id=507049473&l=346b8

Checked out the East Side Gallery today. It's a shame that vandals have had no respect for the paintings. They are apparently gonna repaint it with the original artists later this year but how they will be able to prevent the same thing happening again is beyond me.

Went on the highly recommended alternative tour. The Berlin street art and graffiti scene is pretty cool, but again many bits from (in)famous artists like Banksy have been stolen. Adam led us from Auguststrasse (August street!) through upmarket Hackescher Markt to the slums and squatter areas near the river. Would have enjoyed it more if my face was not frozen.

Day 3

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=57323&id=507049473&l=4143e

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=57519&id=507049473&l=27e08

Woke up early to check out a few places before the tour at 11. Bloody cold and snowing to boot. But I'll take snow over rain any day. Went up the Reichstag glass dome, and also walked around Tiergarten for a bit.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was a model camp that others were built after. Natasha led us through the entire camp, and I learned a lot from her. The triangle shape for example, was a control theory thingy that minimises the number of guards to watch over the maximum number of prisoners. Day by day, the prisoners were practically destroyed physically and mentally by prison guards from hell. I honestly do not know how some people survived through that era. I pray that we will never let this happen again, and that the departed rest in peace.

After the doom and gloom, I went for the pub crawl. And here I was wondering where the Aussies were in Europe. Haha obviously drinking themselves silly at every opportunity! Met sisters from Doncaster, guy from near Glen, girl from Canberra, even the guides were from Melbourne! Also hung out with some Brits from between Manchester and Liverpool. One of the guys, a truckie actually had drinks with Ronaldinho and Puyol at a bar in Barcelona! How cool is that! But he said Liverpool will win 12-0 against Real Madrid haha we shall see about that =) Hopped through 4 bars and ended the night at Matrix.

Day 2

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=57150&l=c8709&id=507049473

Picked a great day to go on a walking tour! It started raining almost as soon as we begun our journey from the Brandenburg Gate. And the weather got progressively worse with every hour.

Lewis the history buff was my guide for today. I learnt a lot about Germany, and in particular Berlin today and it is amazing how much change has occured here just in the last few decades alone. This country has pretty much tried every political ideology known to man: monarchy, democracy, socialism, communism. All in all a very entertaining 3.5 hours, ending at the Berlin Dom with the story of the big Schabowski. Poor dude!

Decided to check out Pergamon Museum to duck out of the rain. The exhibits are impressive, and the audio guides are very informative.

Probably will check out the concentration camp tomorrow, and maybe the pub crawl! =)

Day 1

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=56975&l=46c3b&id=507049473

Checked in to retro East Seven hostel! Place looks awesome =)

Later I went out to the city and took the #100 and #200 buses that go round many of the sights. Made a pit stop at Potsdam Platz to check out the Sony Centre... damn it's huge! Also noticed that the Berlin International Film Festival is in town; perhaps I will bump into some Hollywood stars on my free New Berlin tour tomorrow? Haha

Had a bit of a weird night haha! My roomies Sean, John (Canada) and Okan (Turkey) were leaving the next day so I joined them in the lounge for beer and whiskey. They really wanted to check out the Berlin night scene so we headed out. Okan asked the girl at reception and she recommended number 2 and 6 on our map (the rest were closed). But Sean said to head out to the subway, cause "that's where the action is". So we did.

Then, we took a train to Alexanderplatz because on Saturday he saw heaps of people hanging out and drinking at the station. Obviously too drunk to realise that today was Monday! It was deserted haha. Had a cheeseburger at Burger King before heading back to our stop. So the rest of us were getting hyped up to check out 2 or 6, Sean went up and talked to a local girl. She told him to go to the next station, cause "there's thousands of bars there." Right. So off we went.

Again, there was NOTHING there. At this point, I left the bunch and went back to the hostel. In conclusion, I stepped out for a cheeseburger last night.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://augustineurope.blogspot.com/2009/02/berlin-berlin.html' title='Berlin! Both stunningly beautiful in their own rights.

A series of unfortunate events:
1. Train station to city centre = 2km. LONG WALK.
2. Signage is poor and misguiding. Theres a sign saying "info" to the left while theres a "info" sign stuck on a hotel on the right. Got utterly lost.
3. Info centre at St. Barbara was closed (for lunch) when I got there.
4. Decided to walk back. Followed the signs... to the wrong train station!
5. Trekked back uphill, and checked that if I missed the train, I would have to wait 2 hours.
6. Ran (and walked when out of breath. Am so unfit). But still missed the train by few minutes.

So I took the bus back down to the city, and had a late lunch. Luckily I didn't miss the next train, or I would go on a killing spree!

Cesky Krumlov

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=56505&l=f7abd&id=507049473

Sucked.

Bloody takes 4 hours to get there from Prague. And the trains here are super old! Imagine this, the toilets are not flushable! Theres only a pedal to... well you get the point. Had to change to an even older train at Ceske Budejovice. Sigh.

And when I got here, everything was CLOSED. Castle tower CLOSED; castle gardens CLOSED; monastery CLOSED and even the local Eggenburg brewery... CLOSED! Gah!

And there were hordes of Asian tourists! Chinese, Korean, Japanese wandered around in the busloads.

At least I had some hot chocolate (x2) and honey cake to cheer me up. And a beer at the station, where I had to wait almost an hour.

One bright spot: Sayaka (Nerima, Japan) mistook me for a Jap at the station and we ended up being travel buddies back all the way to Prague. Language barrier was definitely an issue but we got along fine; she loves Czech puppets and The Hives! She was so nice, she bought me a hot coffee without telling me... Oh also to a French and Malaysian couple who joined us for the second half =)

Had a random encounter in a pub just now. I was having dinner when this drunk Czech guy came over and started showing me card tricks. His name was Petr and we tried talking, but all that came out was "I love Prague" and "have to call my mother because she is my mother". Kept me entertained though so I bought him a beer. Holy crap! 0.5 litre (1 pint) of beer only costs 20 crowns, less than 1 euro!

Oh and my toothbrush fell into the toilet bowl. However, English mags in Austria are terribly expensive (FHM 11 euros! WTF!) so be prepared!

Didn´t get much sleep last night because we watched the Superbowl XLIII until 4am (great game!) at the Wombar. Thanks to Andrew (Maine,USA) and Park (Busan, South Korea) for being great company! All the best with your travels =)

Anyways, I got to Graz around mid day. It started snowing just as I got to the river, so I ducked into the Mur Insel cafe for a hot chocolate. This and the "friendly alien" museum nearby represent the modern side of Graz. And yes it does look like testicles haha!

To get to the scenic point, you can either: (a) take a glass lift up from inside the mountain, (b) walk up the 260 steps or (c) take the furnicular railway up. I went up by (a) and down by (c), cause my legs were still killing me from yesterday. After that I walked to the city centre and took photos of all the landmarks.

I must say that although winter has its charms, a lot of buildings around Austria are either closed or being renovated =(

Salzburg - The Hills Are Alive! Salzburg is pretty far for a daytrip so maybe making it a stop would have been a better option.

Joined the Panorama "Sound of Music" tours. Trudy was extremely entertaining, making us sing with her while she cracked jokes and told us random trivia about the movie. Did you know the von Trapps actually existed? Haha I have to watch (and finish) the movie again. The enthusiasm from everyone on the bus was infectious... even I was singing along!

Leslie (NZ) and Jackie (Manchester) joined me for some apple strudel with hot vanilla sauce. Yum! After the tour, I did a little sightseeing of my own: checked out the famous shopping streets, churches, statues, before finally trekking all the way up to the fortress. It was quite a walk, but the views were incredible. Snacked on some apricot jam donuts and bosna (this rocks!) before I headed back to Vienna.

Trudy left us with this altered version of the song "Do Re Mi" from the movie. Enjoy!

Do Re Mi (Beer version)

Do, a beer; a german beer,
Ray, the man who serves me beer,
Me, the one who drinks the beer,
Far, a long wait for my beer,
So, I buy another beer,
La, la la la la la beer,
Tea, no thanks I´ll have a beer!
That would bring us back to do~

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://augustineurope.blogspot.com/2009/02/salzburg-hills-are-alive.html' title='Salzburg - The Hills Are Alive! I was so hopelessly lost for most of the day. Basically I just walked towards the next grand building in sight, I didn´t even know what most of them were!

I´ve never realised how dependant I am on English. Everything here is in German! I went to the supermarket and couldn´t figure out which was "still" water. Perhaps I will pick up a bit, since I am headed to Germany later on anyways.

Wombats is really nice, modern and clean. So far, there is only me and 2 guys from Texas in the 6 bed room. Wonder if it will fill up.

Tried a Wien schnitzel. It was so huge that I couldn't even finish half!

Day 2

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=54961&l=43420&id=507049473 (Part A)

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=54962&l=43bb2&id=507049473 (Part B)

Bought a daily tram pass today to do some real exploring! Started out the day by checking out Hunderwasserhaus and KunstHausWien. This artist/architect, named Hundertwasser declared war on the straight line and is inspired by nature. The gallery had uneven floors, an array of colours and plants growing out the windows and the rooftops.

After that, I pretty much randomly walked or trammed to anywhere that looked interesting. There were ice rinks and food kiosks set up for some event in front of the Rauthaus. The parliament building was stunning; the Hofburg palace breathtaking.

Took a break and went into Cafe Sacher, where the Original Sacher Torte lives on. It was delicious... definitely recommended by me! After that I got lost again (haha) but suffice to say, all of Vienna is beautiful and getting lost here is half the fun =)

Day 3
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=55913&l=80cdc&id=507049473 (Part A)

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=55918&l=00dd6&id=507049473 (Part B)

Started the day off slowly by doing my long overdue laundry (4.50 euros! ouch). At about mid day, I went down to my favourite church, the Stephansdom/St Stephen's Cathedral. The structure is so detailed and beautiful, and the roof top radiates playfulness with colourful tiles. Climbed up the south tower for a great view of Vienna. As one of my roomies put it, "you kill 2 birds with 1 stone, closer to God and exercise!"

Haus der Musik was recommended to me by my roomies. It didn't disappoint, with each level showcasing things as varied as how the body perceives sounds to famous composers backgrounds. The 4th level showcased the future of music, with people using their limb movement to create sound.

Finally, that night I did something I always wanted to do in Vienna... immerse myself in Austrian culture through music. Kursalon was the lavish stage, and the orchestra, opera singers and dancers didn't disappoint; with crowd-pleasing and entertaining interactions with the audience. This was entertainment at its very best, and for 29 euros (student) it was worth every cent.

Capped off a great night with a few farewell drinks at the Wombar with the Texan guys; Dean, Drew, and Brian. Although most of Dubai is still under construction, you can't help but marvel at the unique and modern offices, malls and hotels. Villas and residences are sandcastle-esque, with brown walls and boxy designs. Phillies dominate the hospitality sector, whereas the cabbies are your usual Indians and Pakistanis.

On our first day, we went to the Souk Madinat Jumeirah. It's basically a one-stop tourist destination, where you can buy anything from magic lamps to Starbucks frappes. While there, we alighted on an "abra" tour. The guide enthusiastically pointed out where several famous people stayed, such as Michael Schumaker and George Clooney. The one fact that amazes me was that the entire place was built in only 3 years, with construction going on 24/7 during that time. Conjures up images of whips being cracked at labourers eh?

Saw (and took many photos of) the 7 star Burj al Arab from here. Turns out we cannot go in to have a look unless we are guests =( Oh well, someday after I strike the Tattslotto I will be back!

From there, we took a cab to Atlantis, at the Palm Jumeirah. There was a water park, dolphin bay and "lost chambers" aquarium. Didn't go in any of the above, just took some photos at the central aquarium. Stopped for dessert at Cold Stone (Cold Stone =/= Cold Rock? Menu also exactly the same...)

They should have built a look-out point for tourists to see the whole "palm". Maybe they do for hotel guests, I don't know. Most of it is still not completed anyway, it really will be an awesome sight in future.

Went back to Pisces at Souk for dinner. Started with seared scallops... yum! For our main course, we had a whole sea bass cooked in a sea salt crust. The fish was really tender and the accompanying veges and potatoes were perfect. We left very very full and satisfied.

Day 2:

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=54510&l=bbe09&id=507049473

Desert Safari = AWESOME! Watching the land cruiser navigate the dunes while being thrown around as if in a roller coaster ranks is unbelievable. Stops included a camel farm, a sunset point and an Arabian village.

Although very touristy, the village was fun! Got to ride the camels on a short round trip (while 2 other camels escaped! haha poor guy was deciding whether to run after the camels or keep with us). Also took that infamous photo in the local garb hehe. Capped off a fun night with a mish-mash of Arabian(?) food piled up on a plate, while watching a belly dancer perform.

Day 3

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=54767&l=3fb86&id=507049473

Went to the Dubai Mall. It was huge, but most of the shop lots were not open yet. Lesson of the day.. go queue up for the taxi early! We waited more than half an hour. And when we did get one, he was a psycho who almost got us killed! Fucking talking on the phone while driving... a lorry almost rammed us side-on but the other guy did a 180 degree spin on the highway right beside us. Luckily no one was hurt. I hate cabbies!

Dubaiiiiiii

Greetings from the Middle East!

Had a nice "abra" (small boat) tour at Madinat Jumeirah. However, you would have to find the nearest bureau de change, bring your passport along and withdraw a fixed amount. So mafan! And you end up with huge wads of money, constantly worrying if the nice old lady behind you is going to rob you at knifepoint.

What about using a regular ATM card? A withdrawal using a regular ATM card will incur a 2% conversion fee and a AUD$ 4 fee every time you withdraw. By comparision, having a cash passport only subjects you to a once-off 1% conversion fee (at time of purchase) and a withdrawal fee of AUD$ 3.75. Besides that, the cash passports are not linked to your bank account in any way!

Anyways my stuff is packed and I'm good to go!
